It was a bright and breezy morning at the sanctuary when the caretakers announced:
“We’re introducing someone new today.”
Luna the panther flicked her tail with curiosity, and Venya the dog perked up his ears. A new animal? A new human? Or maybe… a new toy?
Just then, a small figure trotted out of the van—a round, fluffy creature with silky fur, tiny paws, and a surprisingly confident strut.
“Everyone, meet Mr. Chun.”
Luna blinked slowly. Venya tilted his head. The creature looked like a mix between a cat and a teddy bear. With calm eyes and a charming little grin, Mr. Chun walked right up to Venya and gave him a gentle nose boop.
Instant best friends.
Mr. Chun is a Pallas’s cat—also known as a manul—a rare, grumpy-looking wild feline known for its expressive face and thick fur. But Mr. Chun was different. He was friendly, curious, and surprisingly bold for his size.
He didn’t hesitate to explore the sanctuary grounds, hop onto Luna’s observation platform, or steal a treat from Venya’s bowl (with zero shame). Luna, usually aloof, stared at him for a long time, then let out a soft, amused chuff.

Mr. Chun flopped on his side dramatically and began cleaning his face, completely unbothered by the 90-kilo panther watching him.
By the end of the day, Mr. Chun had made himself right at home. He’d found a cozy corner in the sun, played tug-of-war with Venya, and even shared a moment of mutual grooming with Luna—something she rarely offers.
Turns out, Mr. Chun might look serious, but he’s full of charm and friendship.
